Expression of Interest (EOI) is a stage in which you have completed all your documents and you need to apply for the visa subclass. Australia has very strict rules regarding how the EOI should be filled out and how it can be submitted. You cannot submit an EOI unless you have completed your skills assessment.
A skills assessment is based on your profession, it is a form of validation according to Australia’s standards. Considering you studied in a different country; they need to see the alignment of your qualification to Australian standards. Even if you studied English, you will need to prove your English proficiency. If you work in a profession that is focused on your language abilities, you may be required to do an advanced English test.
Work Experience needs to be specific to the career. In South Africa, many people become a jack of all trades, however, in Australia you need to be specific in your career and become a professional in that one area. Work experience gets vetted within your skills assessment and you get points for years after your qualification.
An EOI would be based on your points. What state or region are you going to apply for? How many points will they add to your application? Canberra recently had a matrix draw on 13 January 2023 and they invited 734 residents and overseas applicants to apply for the visa subclass 190 or 491. The minimum points requirement was 70.
One can score 70 points if they have over 5 years of work experience, are younger than 33 and hold a bachelor's and are proficient or superior in English. This example does not include a partner with a skill set which can also boost your application score.
To summarise, an expression of interest is validating your points and showing interest in the country and the visa subclasses. If you are not in an EOI phase then your immigration journey has not started. This is a vital stage; however, you need to hold a legitimate skills assessment. Have you started yours?
