The Canadian economy thrives off the influx of international skilled workers; however, the unpredictability of processing times disadvantages her plan. Processing visas has become a delay in economic growth. In the Canadian Bar Associations Immigration Law Section meeting on the 12 of October 2022, the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) presented a new way to overcome system issues. The main goal is to modernize the immigration system to increase applications and improve processing times.
The IRCC has taken 7 steps to modernize immigration systems in Canada.
1 – Financial Investment: CAD$428,9 million to be invested over 5 years from the 2021 budget to ensure an enterprise-wide digital platform to replace the current system.
2 – Advanced data analytics: Due to data analytics, visitors' visas are assessed 87% faster.
3 - Digital Application Portal: Creating online applications easier reducing processing times.
4 – Permanent residence tracker: Allowing candidates can track their application.
5 – Receipt system online for PR Cards: Permanent residents can use this portal to apply for and receive Permanent residency cards.
6 – Citizenship developments: The option for citizens to complete an online test, track their application and allow for virtual ceremonies.
7 – Updating existing procedures: Update and improve online processes and evaluate accurate application times. Considering exemption for medical examinations and conducting virtual and telephone interviews for overseas offices and visa centres.
These steps are expected to standardize the immigration process until March 2023 and establish fundamental cloud elements to assist with the enhancements phase from April 2023 to December 2026. The development of the immigration process and modernization is expected to bring about shorter waiting times, clearer applications and also increase the volume of applications.
