Express Entry is a system in which Canada manages their three Immigration programs: the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program(FSTP). The points-based system is designed to rank candidates’ profiles and top scorers are more likely to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) allowing the application for permanent residency.
Candidates will receive points based on their age, language abilities, education and work experience provided that their profession is a TEER level 0,1,2 or 3 on the National Occupation Classification list.
The COVID-19 pandemic disturbed administration and travel the express entry draws were paused for over 18 months. On the 23rd of November 2023, the Express Entry draw pulled 4 750 candidates with a minimum score of 491. These candidates have all received an ITA for permanent residency in Canada. Permanent residency is valid for 5 years, thereafter the resident can apply for citizenship and be granted a Canadian passport. Along with the residency comes working, studying rights and social benefits including access to free healthcare, education, social grants and a state pension.
The express entry draws will need to decrease the point threshold for Canada to reach her immigration targets. Changes have been made to increase the intake of skilled workers to improve Canada’s economy.

In 2023 the Express Entry draws will continue, however, will vary based on economic needs and will be closely watched. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score will remain the deciding factor. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has deciphered the new route to entice ITAs to be sent based on occupation, education and language abilities.
