Express Entry is Canada’s immigration system that hosts a draw from a pool of different Canadian visa programs based on candidates’ Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) typically hold a draw every 2 weeks on a Wednesday, however, there have been irregularities which have made Express Entry candidates confused.
Since 2015 Canada has held between 23 and 30 draws per year. The Immigration minister's major role is to address chronic labour market shortages. Since the Pandemic, there has been a delay in the draw rounds. Since the last draw in 2022 on the 23rd of November there was a 6-week delay and then 2 draws in January 2023 in concurrent weeks. This was strange however, the 6-week delay was confirmed to be a system glitch. We are expecting Express Entry draws to be happening in a more regular fashion moving forward.
It is important to understand that the IRCC and Immigration and Refugees Protection ACT are under no law dictating the frequency of the Express Entry draws. Canada has however planned and will implement a new strategy to inviting skilled professionals.
To reach Canada’s target of 82 880 invitations to apply for residency in 2023, they will focus on a categorized approach. IRCC will be looking at occupation, work experience, education or language ability. This is a positive move for Canada as they will be able to focus on specific chronic shortages and progress the country's development.
