The NOC system is a National Occupation Classification system that Canada uses to decipher the professions in shortage and their level of demand. To enter into the Express Entry pool you need to have a listed occupation in levels A, B or 0.
The previous NOC system (NOC 2016) requires the federal skilled worker to have work experience in the code they chose, however, the new NOC 2021 brings a slight adjustment to the requirements.
The IRCC has introduced a TEER system – Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities. The new system has changed the skill type categories from Skill Type code to TEER numbers.
Noc 2016 | Noc 2021 |
Skill Type 0 | TEER 0 |
Skill Type A | TEER 1 |
Skill Type B | TEER 2 |
Skill Type C | TEER 3 |
The adjusted requirements are as follows:
Federal Skilled Worker Program: CLB 7 is required for English or French skills. Work experience must be in a TEER 0,1,2 or 3. The candidate will need one year of continuous work experience within the last 10 years. A job offer is not needed but extra points would be provided if applicable. Secondary Education is required and tertiary education gets awarded points accordingly.
The transition to the TEER system will not affect the points allocation however, it will change the occupation demands. Some new occupations that have become eligible under the Federal Skilled Workers System are as follows.
- Payroll administrators
- Dental assistants and dental laboratory assistants
- Nurse aides, orderlies, and patient service associates
- Pharmacy technical assistants and pharmacy assistants
- Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants
