Canada’s 2017 Immigration Targets

In order to stay competitive, Canada will allow 300 000 immigrants, most of which will be economic migrants, to enter the country in 2017. The reason for this is that the country has a very low population density, a slow population growth and a growing older to senior citizen community. Canada’s population growth, through births, remains critically low presenting a unique problem where the talent pool in the country is too small to ensure economic stability in the future.

Canada’S 2017 Immigration Targets

In an effort to increase the country’s skills pool and to ensure that innovation and growth continues, Canada is actively recruiting foreign professionals, who meet their job market needs and immigration criteria, to migrate to the country eventually becoming eligible for Canadian residency.

Canada employs a progressive immigration system – so progressive and efficient that President Trump is interested in employing a similar system to manage the USA’s immigration department. Canada’s system is known as the Express Entry System.

Applicants register an online profile and are then automatically ranked by the system based on immigration and skills criteria including age, education, language ability, and work experience. Points are awarded for each category up to a total possible of 600 points.

Potential immigrants get additional points if they have a sibling who is a citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Immigrants' spouses are assessed on the same criteria if they are also applying to come to Canada.

With a population of about 35 million, the immigration target for 2017 amounts to 0.9 percent of the population. According to the 2011 census, 20.6 percent of the population were foreign-born and immigrated to Canada. More recent numbers for 2016 will be released later this year.
