Canada gives graduates top marks!

Graduates with Doctoral and Master’s Degree are awarded 25, out of the required 100 point to be considered for immigration selection, as soon as they start applying for their Canadian visa. This is because Canada is a growing stable economy and is keen on attracting educated and talented expats to their shores who will positively contribute to their society.

Selection Criteria

Under the Federal Skilled Worker Visa stream there are six selection factors that must be met. Each factor receives a score particular to your case and qualifications. To be considered to be invited to apply for this Visa the applicant must score no less than 67 out of a possible 100 points. Being well educated could already account for almost a third of the required points.

Canada Immigration and Citizenship assesses federal skilled worker applications on these six selection factors;

• English and/or French skills
• Education (Maximum 25 points – reserved for those with Ph.D’s and Master’s Degrees)

If you are a South African and have earned your degree at one of our local Universities you will have to have your foreign education assessed by an agency approved by CIC to show it is valid and equal to a completed Canadian credential.

You must include your Canadian credential or your foreign credential and Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report when you apply.

• Experience
• Age
• Arranged employment in Canada
• Adaptability

Having your foreign education assessed

Start by sending an original Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report with proof of your foreign, in your case South African, credential (diploma or certificate, and transcripts) to a foreign education agency. Your New World Immigration consultant will assist you with this. Failing to do so will result in your application not being processed.

If your report shows that your credential is not equal to a completed Canadian one, you are not eligible to apply under the FSWP, but if it shows your credentials are recognized you will be rewarded the 25 points towards your application.

My spouse holds the same educational qualifications

The good news is that in the case where your spouse or life partner also holds a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. their points will also be counted towards the visa application.
