Canada: Use Your Sibling’s Residency to Your Advantage

If you have siblings who are residents of Canada you might be able to use it to your advantage. Canada’s immigration laws were amended last year and now a brother or sister already living in the country could actually make your immigration path a bit smoother.

Use Your Sibling’S Residency To Your Advantage

Effectively this means that you could piggyback on your sib’s residency status to gain residency in Canada yourself.

On June 6, 2017, Canada Immigration Refugees and Citizenship introduced a new component to their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) for Express Entry that allows additional points to be awarded to candidates in the Express Entry pool with a sibling in Canada.

At the time of those changes, Canada Immigration stated that “the CRS scores of all profiles in the pool will be updated automatically before the next invitation round after the updates. This could take up to two weeks.”

Consequently, it may be some days until the next draw occurs, as Canada Immigration is updating the CRS points score for all profiles in the pool. Candidates who stand to gain points as a result of these changes may be assured those points will be counted in their score for the next draw. Good news for candidates who are already in the pool is that their points can only be adjusted upwards and no one will lose points as a result of the new requirements.

Canada Immigration said that their system will automatically update all profiles already in the system so that they may benefit from the changes. Candidates who did not declare a sibling living in Canada are encouraged to do so, so that they may benefit from the extra points.
