Australia and Canada rely on migrants to fill positions for economic growth. The top occupations for skilled visas in 2022 were software engineers, ICT business analysts, chefs, residency medical officers and developer programmers. The effects of COVID-19 delayed the intake of skilled professionals and as we end 2022, the race is back on.
Canada has increased their immigration goals of resident intakes to 465 000 in 2023, 485 000 in 2024 and 500 000 in 2025. Considering the popular demand for a better life and residency benefits, this number is incredibly high. Most Canadian Express entry draws invite less than 5000 people for permanent residency, thereafter – not all follow through with the residency application. 2023 will come with new visa pathways and systems to increase the migrant intake.
Australia competes by increasing its skilled migrant intake from 160 000 to 195 000 for 2023.
“No migrant should be “permanently temporary” and this larger program helps to ensure we don’t simply ramp up temporary migration, forcing people to live for years in precious conditions, devoid of any certainty,” Immigration Minister Andrew Giles told the CEDA conference on migration in November.
Australia has recognised and publicly voiced its concerns and the significance of skilled migrants for their economic growth. “We need a system that attracts and retains talent – a system that is simple, efficient and complementary to the skills existing in Australia.” – Mr Giles. As one of the most attractive countries for skilled workers, Australia needs to adjust their systems to allow for faster processing and more intake. These are all on the horizon for Australia and Canada.
