3 tips to keep in mind when applying for a Volunteer’s Permit
If you’re thinking of volunteering in South Africa, then its best you apply for a volunteer’s permit. If you are a UK, USA or European citizen, then you will be allowed to perform voluntary work on a visitor’s visa if your stay is less than 3 months. During your 3 month stay in South Africa whilst volunteering, you will be allowed to extend your visa for an extra 3 months or should you decide to stay for longer, then your best option would be to apply for the volunteers permit.
When applying for your volunteers permit, have these documents handy when submitting your application;
• Proof of funds, to evidence that you are able to support yourself for the duration of the voluntary program in South Africa.
• If your stay is less than 12 months in South Africa, then you would need to be in position of a return air ticket back to your country of origin. If your stay is longer than 12 months then a cash deposit would need to be paid to your foreign mission at the time of lodgement.
• You would need an official letter from the volunteer’s organisation stating your activities and the duration of time spent in South Africa.
