Applying for a Student Permit
A student visa is intended for international students considering of enrolling in an education institution in South Africa. Please note that an institution may not accept a foreign student until their student visa has been issued by the Department of Home Affairs. It is advisable to gather all information and documents needed for the student visa before you enter South Africa and submit your application at least 60 days before commencing with your course.
The processing time for a student permit in South Africa would take about 60-80 working days, so plan well in advance. The validity of your student visa for school is normally 3 years and tertiary would normally be valid for 2 years. A renewal for a student visa must be done 30 days before your visa expires or else the Department of Home Affairs would refuse to accept your application.
If you hold a valid student visa, then you will be allowed to work for 20 hours per week but not during academic vacations. When you need to complete your in-service training, then you would need to get written permission from Home Affairs to allow you to work full-time until your in-service training has been completed.
Student visa’s will only be offered to students who are studying full time and part time students would not be successful in applying for a student visa.
