The Department of Home Affairs recently introduced the New Critical Skills Visa to attract highly skilled foreigners to fill the huge gap of skill shortages in South Africa. The Critical Skills Occupation list includes 169 occupations, allowing applicants the right to live and work in South Africa for a period of 5 years and the option to apply for permanent residency.

• Boilermaker ( Strategic Infrastructure Projects)

• Industrial Machinery Mechanic

• Pipe Fitter

• Double Coded Welder

• Raise-bore Operator

• Raise-bore foreman

Registering your occupation in South Africa:

South Africa currently has no accredited body for trade occupations.

So how will I receive my Critical Skills Visa if they have no accredited body?

Must I submit my foreign qualifications to SAQA for an assessment?

Yes, it is a requirement when applying for the Critical Skills Visa.

What if I completed my trade in South Africa?

If you completed your trade in South Africa, then it would not be necessary to send your qualification for an evaluation with SAQA.

Where must I submit my application?

All first time applicants must submit their application abroad in their home country. First time applications will not be accepted in South Africa, if you are using a visitor’s visa or medical visa.

I have a South African Work Visa; can I apply for the Critical Skills Visa in SA?

Yes, applicants who hold a valid temporary long stay visa in South Africa can apply for a change of status.

Do I need a job offer to apply for the Critical Skills Visa?

No, the Critical Skills Visa allows you to search for employment opportunities for a period of 12 months in South Africa.

When can I apply for Permanent Residency?

If you can prove more than 5 years experience, then you are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency. Applications for Permanent Residency and Critical Skills can be submitted simultaneously.
