The Critical Skills Visa provides a great opportunity for highly skilled applicants to live and work in South Africa and the option to apply for permanent residency should they wish to permanently reside here. The Critical Skills route allows the applicant to qualify for the visa by assessing their foreign qualifications, occupation listed on the Critical Skills List and registering with a professional body specific to their occupation.

What you need to do before applying for the Critical Skills Visa:

How do I register with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession?

• Applicant must complete the application form

• The original application form must be returned to SACAP’s offices with certified copies of qualifications, an updated cv, proof of payment and evaluated SAQA certificate.

• Any applicant applying under the professional category must write and pass the Professional Exam Test.

Once you have completed the registration process and successfully received confirmation of registration or membership then only may you submit your application for a Critical Skills Visa.

How long will it take to process my Critical Skills Visa?

First time applicants must submit their applications abroad at the responsible South African Embassy in their home country. South African Embassies have a general turn-around time of 30 – 40 working days depending on the amount of applications lodged at that point in time. In South Africa applications might take a bit longer due to the amount of applications lodged on a daily basis. It is important to note that only applicants who hold a temporary long stay visa may apply for a change of status in South Africa.

What is the validity of the Critical Skills Visa?

The Critical Skills Visa is issued to applicants for a period not exceeding 5 years. The Critical Skills Visa is extendable and allows applicants to apply for permanent residency if they can prove more than 5 years of relevant work.
