How to successfully apply for a Study Visa
If you are not a South African resident interested in studying at one of South Africa’s top tertiary educational institutions you will need a Study visa which will be valid for the duration of your course. If you plan to go to any South African school the visa issued to you would be valid for 36 months and if you will be studying at another type of institution instead, your visa will be valid for two years.
The wonderful thing about a Study visa is that you can also apply for conditions on the visa that will allow you to work as part of the requirements for successfully completing your educational qualification.
To allow you to lawfully work in South Africa as part of the requirements to successfully complete your qualification, you will need:
• an offer to do practical training
• consent from the educational institution
• proof that your are still a registered student
Furthermore you would require permission from the South African Department of Home Affairs that will allow you to work in the country through the practical training your qualification requires. This consent is issued free of charge in the case of registered students with current and valid study permits.
Alternatively, as a foreigner studying at a higher educational institution with a valid study permit, you may work part-time for no more than 20 hours per week. However, you may not work during academic vacations.
