The Department of Home Affairs combined the quota permit and exceptional skills permit to form the newly introduced critical skills visa. Industrial Designers Can Now Apply For A Critical Skills Visa


A foreigner who possesses a skill that is deemed critical in South Africa may apply for a critical skills visa. The critical skills visa does not require the applicant to have a job offer at the time of applying and allows the applicant to search for employment opportunities in South Africa for a period of 12 months.

How to qualify for a critical skills visa:

• 1 x occupation on critical skills list

• Register with a professional body in South Africa specific to your occupation

• Assess all foreign qualifications

Qualifying for permanent residency:

Applicants who can prove 5 years work experience may apply for permanent residency in South Africa.

Your application for a critical skills visa must be submitted abroad in your country of residence if you’re not in possession of a valid South African temporary residence visa. Applications will only be accepted in South Africa if you hold a valid temporary residence status in SA.
