South African Department Of Home Affairs Says Meeting With Protesting Airlines Will Not Change Anything (1)

On Friday, 29 August 2014 the South African Department of Home Affairs said that while officials will be meeting with 20 airlines who have addressed various concerns over the country’s new visa regulations.

SA Tourism reported that the Department of Home Affairs have agreed to meet with the 20 airlines who signed the letter bringing certain concerns about the new visa legislation to the department’s attention.

The airlines said in the letter that the new immigration regulations would be the catalyst for “a tourism, PR, economic and political disaster”.

While News24 reported that the requested 12-month reprieve of these laws will form part of the meeting’s agenda. But spokesperson for the department, Mayihlome Tshwete, says that this is not entirely accurate.

“We don’t want to give people the wrong idea. We have agreed to meet with airline representatives in September because they requested a meeting,” he says. “It is unfortunate that these concerns have been raised at the last minute as these policies have been accessible to the public for a long time.”

Tshwete was willing to confirm only that the department would be open to constructive discussions during the meeting.
