Further targets that assisted the syndicate in obtaining stolen identity documents and falsifying documents as well as those who orchestrated bogus marriages were arrested in a well-co-ordinated operation. Thus far a total of eight suspects were arrested by police. Hundreds of documents as well as passports, identity documents, cell phones and laptops were seized during the raids. According to the documents seized by police the syndicate was responsible for immigration crimes affecting people of many foreign nationalities entering South Africa. The suspects will be charged for theft, fraud, theft by false pretenses and for contravening the immigration act. More arrests can be expected as this investigation is on-going. We are appealing to South Africans to always safeguard their identity documents as syndicates are stealing these documents to create falsified documents to help foreigners enter our country illegally.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni congratulated the team for bringing down this syndicate. “This is a major breakthrough for this province and the country as a whole and we want to assure the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal that we are doing everything possible to curb this type of fraudulent activities. The public can also play a role by reporting such syndicates as it is evident that these criminals were operating quiet freely and came into contact with ordinary citizens daily while carrying out these illegal activities,” she said.
