What to do if you lose your Permanent Residency Certificate
If you have recently received your Permanent Residency and included with it comes your Permanent Residency Certificate. Now with the new Permanent Residency process implemented by the Department of Home Affairs, we advise you to take great care of your certificate as it could be a rather daunting task to have it reissued.
To protect your certificate from further damage, we recommend that you laminate your certificate to preserve the look and making it legible for immigration officers when entering or exiting South Africa. If your Permanent Residency Certificate is lost, then your best option would be to apply for confirmation of status which acknowledges your status.
Your Permanent Residency will lapse if you are absent from South Africa for 3 years or more. Please note that the Department of Home Affairs will no longer endorse your passport with a permanent resident sticker as new certificates have replaced them.
