What you need to know about the Student Visa 2014-2015
There have been many significant changes to the student visa, but however this does not affect your status if you currently hold a valid student visa in South Africa. If your student visa is up for renewal, please be aware of the following changes to the student visa;
• Student visas will only be issued to foreign students where the education institution has been approved by the Department of Higher education.
• All foreign students who obtained their PhD in South Africa will automatically qualify to apply for a Critical Skills Visa. (See Critical Skills Occupation List)
• Provide proof of registration as contemplated in the relevant legislation within 60 days of registration
Please note all renewals for a student visa needs to be submitted 60 days before your student visa expires or else the Department of Home Affairs may refuse to accept your application for processing.
The validity of your study visa if you are attending college or university will be valid for the duration of your course and may still work up to 20 hours per week. The student visa will be issued up to 8 years where the applicant is attending primary school in South Africa.
First time applicants may not apply in South Africa for a student visa as a change of status is no longer permitted under the new immigration regulations.
Remember a student visa does not lead to permanent residency unless you have completed your PhD in South Africa and apply for the critical skills visa, which leads to permanent residency.
