Applying for a Visa / Permit Extension or Renewal in South Africa
Most visas can be renewed, but the holiday/visit visa can be extended for a longer period. A holder of an SA Visit Visa can apply for one extension per visit. The rule is that an extension should be applied for 60 days before the visa expires. Extensions can be applied for up to an additional 90 days. If you have entered the country and are not sure if you qualify for a visa extension, please contact us and we will review your situation. If you are from a visa exempt country, you can enter SA and will automatically receive up to 30 to 90 days. You will be allowed one extension once in South Africa. See our Visit Visa section to see if you are Visa Exempt.
Processing Times and Extension Requirements
The processing times for a Visa Extensionthrough NWI is between 30 days and 40 days depending on the workload at Home Affairs. The main requirements for a Visa Extension, amongst other documents, include:
- Passport valid for no less than 30 days after expiry of the intended visit.
- Statement or documentation detailing the purpose and duration of the visit
- Proof of a valid return or onward ticket or sufficient financial means to purchase such ticket or to facilitate the return of the applicant.
- Proof of sufficient financial means
Things to look out for
Check that there are no conditions on your visa that Prohibit Change or Extending. If there are these conditions, then you are not allowed an extension and must return to your country of origin. If you have less than 60 days remaining on your current visa, we can still assist you in most cases.
